In the development of low-voltage heat-resistant wire and cable, usually fall into the choice of what kind of heat-resistant conductor, insulation materials, sheath structure and heat-resistant wire and cable use environment and methods into confusion. If the continuous rated temperature of FEP (commonly known as Teflon-fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer) and silicone rubber insulated cables are both 200°C, what is the difference?
Answer: FEP Teflon is a thermoplastic that will melt again when exposed to high enough temperatures. Silicone rubber is a thermosetting material, and under the action of a heat-activated catalyst, a stronger chemical bond can be formed in its molecule. When exposed to excessively high temperatures, the silicone rubber will carbonize or degrade to a very fine powder.
This fundamental difference is very important for deciding whether to apply cable products to ultra-high temperature environments or flame environments. The plastic insulation layer will melt in the installation pipe and on the cable tray, and drip on the structure and equipment below, requiring expensive cleaning costs or replacement. The silicone rubber material is the opposite, it is only carbonized into powder in high temperature or flame environment, and it is easy to remove and replace. In addition, Teflon is a material harder than silicone rubber, and its ultimate tensile strength is twice that of silicone rubber.
This difference is why a fiber braid is added to the surface of the silicone rubber insulated wire and cable. The addition of a braided layer can improve the cut resistance and abrasion resistance of the product.
FEP Teflon is both stiff and hard. The FEP insulation layer has a certain memory. After the wire and cable are wound around the coil and then put away, it will always maintain the original ring shape when packaged in a roll.
Silicone rubber insulated wire and cable on the contrary, they are very soft, no memory of the shape, is very suitable for repeated bending occasions.
From the perspective of electrical properties, these two materials are good electrical insulation materials. FEP Teflon is more suitable for transmitting high-frequency AC signals, because FEP Teflon can be extruded into the thinnest insulation thickness, which can reduce signal path loss, improve transmission rate and extend transmission distance without using an amplifier. In contrast, silicone rubber insulated wire and cable will retain a capacitive charge for a long time.
In addition, in terms of moisture resistance, FEP Teflon is moisture-proof. It will not absorb moisture, even if the insulation thickness is very thin, moisture will not penetrate into the interior. Silicone rubber, like many electrical insulating materials, absorbs a small amount of moisture and enters the structure through the insulating layer.
Q 2: If the continuous temperature rating of PFA Teflon and silicone rubber insulated cables is 200°C, what is the difference? Which material is better for the same application?
Answer: The performance of PFA Teflon (tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoroalkoxy vinyl ether copolymer, also known as perfluoroalkylate and soluble polytetrafluoroethylene) is similar to that of FEP, except that the rated temperature of PFA is 250 ℃. The performance of the silicone rubber with a rated temperature of 200°C is similar to that of the mixture material with a rated temperature of 250°C.
